Climbing Mt. Athabasca...good weather and great views
Unfortunately, none of us thought to take a long-range photo of Mt. Athabasca (say from the tourist lodge across the highway). This (foreshortened) shot is from where the climb starts. After perhaps an hour of hiking up the rock of the terminal moraine, we got on the lower Athabasca glacier. Sun, clouds and light provided good picture opportunities. The summit appears much closer then it actually is due to camera foreshortening.
Dan tried really hard to find this particular crevasse (grin). Traversing this section was one area where we did not want to have anyone start sliding! Heading to the upper plateau of Athabasca.
Dan on the summit ridge of Athabasca. Dan and Mike on the summit ridge of Mt. Athabasca. View looking North from the summit. Lodge is at lower right.
View of the Columbia icefields and Mt. Columbia from the summit of Mt. Athabasca. Ted and Dan enjoying a snack and the view from the summit of Mt. Athabasca. Dan & Mike ready to head down from the summit of Mt. Athabasca.
Looking down toward the glacier the pours off of the Columbia icefield. You can see the tourist busses and "trail" they plow on the glacier for tourists to travel on a "real" glacier! Heading down the Mt. Athabasca summit plateau. Back across the attention-getting traverse on Mt. Athabasca.
Next...on to climb Mt. Edith Cavell
